I have left my words in many places all over the world. In reality, I know that the places I have visited do not constitute a global trip - merely a few thousand miles - but its further that some places that other people have gone. I've written on laptops in airports, on buses, sat…
I will always be a runner
I don't believe in the merits of constant motion, as one needs to settle into oneself in order to exist, set down roots, and build a home. Yet I do love travel. I adore running. And I think that with the right amount of balance, and of course, attention to limbs and feet and the…
Existential Notetaking
I thought of the northern lights and how everyone wants to go see them someday. I don't know if it's in my destiny to witness an illusion - if that is what it is - but I don't know everything and I am open to the experience. Choosing to return to the present, and the…
Finding the Ocean in a Seashell
I used to like picking up seashells on the beach if they were big enough to put to my ear because I thought it was fascinating to be able to hear the ocean. Sometimes, I wondered, "how can the ocean sound be inside the shell?" "Where did it come from?" Over time, I realized that…
So *this* is the new year
There's a bruise on the part of my chest where, technically, my heart is located; I wasn't paying attention, naturally, and walked into something. The mark will fade, strange as though it may look, and everything will carry on because everything has to carry on. That's the only way. I'm trying better habits, watching the…
Of Champagne Corks and Feelings
When I'm feeling centered I think "Everything will be ok." When I'm feeling less than, that is when the fear will creep in. I'm not talking about a paralyzing anxiety, just this nagging, niggling presence that brings a little bit of terror into the part of my body where my heart is located. You can feel…
Atomic
Water is made of two hydrogen atoms bonded to an oxygen atom. Some scientists would describe the connections as somewhat bent, askew, or off-kilter, more evidence perhaps that nature is thoroughly, gloriously nuanced. If you were to look closely at a water molecule, you would see it resembles Disney’s Mickey Mouse, a staple of this…
A New York Minute Part I
There's that warm thickness that can only be felt in New York City in the early summer. It's perceptible when the temperature hasn't reached its peak, so the air still has the cold-weather hint of clarity that is completely obliterated by the middle of August. In its place, by then, is a hotter, heavier atmosphere…
What you can’t take with you
I can walk right up those steps and in through the back door because I know my family will be there, excited to see me, waiting for me. I don't live here anymore, but the love is there, under the heavy oak trees and behind those beautiful brick walls. It always has been and I…
What helped the most: Restorative Yoga and Post-Concussion Syndrome
Post-Concussion Syndrome Recovery
On of the most helpful and soothing activities for me in overcoming post-concussion syndrome has been restorative yoga. When I was first concussed, I was a beginner doing a regular hatha yoga class twice per week. I found that I had to stop because it was too much for my head. My instructor suggested we switch to restorative yoga. I then proceeded to do restorative yoga without fail for a year and half. My classes were twice/week for 1.5 hours. On days when I didn’t have a class, I practiced some on my own. It was life changing. During the first 3 – 6 months, I would sometimes find that the restorative yoga class itself caused me to be more aware of my headaches during the class. It was not always pleasant, but my headache levels after the class came down and would stay down for hours at time. After…
